Analog characterization of dielectric relaxation of MIM capacitor using an improved recovery voltage technique

Hogeschool Gent

Dielectric relaxation of capacitor plays an important role in determining the accuracy of analogue sampled-data systems that are based on charge storage, e.g. charge-redistribution A/D converters. To perform an accurate characterization of the dielectric relaxation of MIM capacitor, a technique based on voltage recovery principle has been developed, in which the effects of parasitic capacitance, leakage and mismatch on the characterization have been well minimized or canceled. The technique i...

Analysis and simulation of the sludge profile dynamics in a full-scale clarifier

Hogeschool Gent

A one-dimensional clarifier model was assessed for its capability to describe dynamic full-scale sludge concentration profiles by using the settling properties calibrated with batch settling curve data collected by a SettloMeter((R)) . These sludge concentration profiles and batch settling tests formed part of a detailed one-month measuring campaign on a full-scale wastewater treatment plant; the measurements showed a daily variation in settling properties. Using the settling properties obtai...

Analysis of 2-methylthio-derivatives of isoprenoid cytokinins by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Hogeschool Gent

A sensitive and reliable high-performance liquid chromatographic method with tandem mass spectrometric detection has been developed and used for the determination of 2-methylthio-cytokinin derivatives produced by the phytopathogenic actinomycete Rhodococcus fascians. The cultivation medium containing secreted cytokinins was concentrated and subjected to a solid-phase extraction (C18 and ion-exchange). The purified samples were further separated and analyzed by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. This allowed to ...

Analysis of a nondestructive evaluation technique for defect characterization in magnetic materials using local magnetic measurements

Hogeschool Gent

We study a method for nondestructive testing of laminated strips of a nonlinear magnetic material. Based on local measurements of the magnetic induction at the surface, we are able to reconstruct the proper position of defects inside the material, by solving an inverse problem. This inverse problem is solved by minimizing a suitable cost function using a gradient-based optimization procedure. Calculation of the gradient is done either by the standard method of small perturbations or by solvi...

Analysis of hysteresis in resonance-based position estimation of switched reluctance drives

Hogeschool Gent

In switched reluctance motors, rotor position information can be extracted from the measurement of position-dependent phase voltage resonances. Due to hysteresis in the magnetic core of the machine, subsequently triggered resonances can exhibit different resonance waveforms, even when the rotor is held at a constant angular position. In order to analyze the influence of hysteresis, a finite-difference model of a magnetic lamination is coupled with a Preisach model. A good correspondence is ob...

Analysis of perforated magnetic shields for electric power applications

Hogeschool Gent

The shielding performance of perforated magnetic shields for electric power applications is described. The shielding of an axisymmetric induction heating device is studied as a function of frequency, number of perforations and dimensions of the perforations. From the numerical point of view, the perforations cause the numerical model to be 3D. A numerical optimisation is carried out to find the optimal geometry with respect to the shielding factor and the volume of the shield. For the optimis...

Analysis of phthalate levels in food on the Belgian market

Hogeschool Gent

Phthalates are organic compounds widely used as plasticisers due to their flexible and weak character. Exposure occurs mainly via food ingestion and could cause a wide range of health and reproductive problems in people (e.g. disruption of the human endocrine system). The presence of phthalates in food is not only because of their movement up the food-chain, but also due to their migration from packaging and contact materials into foodstuffs. [1] <br/>In this study, the presence of ten phtha...

Analysis of translated tropes: metaphors, similes &amp; analogies in a case study of the English &amp; Dutch translations of the Russian poet Alexander Galich

Hogeschool Gent

Abstract <br/> <br/>Since the introduction of target-culture approach in translation studies, the study of literary translation focused on the reader’s potential perception of the target text. This paper contains a study of translated tropes dealing with comparison: metaphors, similes &amp; analogies in the English &amp; Dutch translations of the Russian poet Alexander Galich. The goal is twofold: (i) to look how these tropes were rendered in existing translations and (ii) to offer an alterna...

Analyzing Information Exchange of Two-Level Hierarchical System with Two Agents (in Russian)

Hogeschool Gent

The paper researches the informational model of two-level hierarchical system functioning in uncertainty. Coordinator manages the behavior of two agents (subsystems) taking their relationship into account. In case of horizontal links the agents’ behavior can't be formulated as maximization problems for each agent independently but some principles of collaborative behavior are introduced. Such collaborative behavior is expressed in the respective efficiency criterion. It is emphasized that the...

An annotation scheme and gold standard for Dutch-English word alignment

Hogeschool Gent

The importance of sentence-aligned parallel corpora has been widely acknowledged. Reference corpora in which sub-sentential translational correspondences are indicated manually are more labour-intensive to create, and hence less wide-spread. Such manually created reference alignments -- also called Gold Standards -- have been used in research projects to develop or test automatic word alignment systems. In most translations, translational correspondences are rather complex; for example word-b...

An attempt to build

Hogeschool Gent

An attempt to build a tower of forty bilingual dictionaries (that people no longer needed) uses books found at flea markets and in recycled goods shops. The twelve shaky moments in which the tower almost tumbles are rendered in real time, other moments are accelerated. Simultaneously, you hear a radio broadcast by a Pennsylvanian religious radio service, during which a priest spreads a rather controversial message about the timing of Jesus' return to earth. The seven minute video connects thi...
