Accuracy of 4 different algorithms for the analysis of tomographic radionuclide ventriculography using a physical, dynamic 4-chamber cardiac phantom

Hogeschool Gent

Various automatic algorithms are now being developed to calculate left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) ejection fraction from tomographic radionuclide ventriculography. We tested the performance of 4 of these algorithms in estimating LV and RV volume and ejection fraction using a dynamic 4-chamber cardiac phantom.

A combined classification and clustering approach for web people disambiguation

Hogeschool Gent

This paper presents a combined supervised and unsupervised approach for multidocument person name disambiguation.
Based on feature vectors reflecting pairwise comparisons between web pages, a classification algorithm provides linking information about document pairs, which leads to initial clusters. In addition, two different clustering algorithms are fed with matrices of weighted keywords. In a final step the “seed” clusters are combined with the results of the clustering algorithms. Res...

A concise overview of national nutrition action plans in the European Union Member States

Hogeschool Gent

Objective: This study presents an overview of national nutrition action plans in the member states of the European Union (EU), before its enlargement in 2004. In addition, their compliance with key recommendations of the World Health Organization, as documented in the First Action Plan for Food and Nutrition Policy and the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, has tentatively been evaluated on the basis of the policy documents published. Design: Literature review of publicly...

Active Ring Antenna with Tunable Local Oscillator

Hogeschool Gent

In this paper research on active integrated antennas is reported. Those active integrated antennas are able to send and receive modulated data with very simple hardware. For this purpose an existing microstrip antenna design is examined and further adapted and improved. The adapted antenna is hence integrated into the design of a receiver with a tunable local oscillator (LO). The necessary hardware for this tunable LO is also presented. The frequency is selected by means of a Voltage Controll...

Adaptive constructive polynomial fitting

Hogeschool Gent

To extract geometric primitives from edges, we use an incremental linear-time fitting algorithm, which is based on constructive polynomial fitting. In this work, we propose to determine the polynomial order by observing the regularity and the increase of the fitting cost. When using a fixed polynomial order under- or even overfitting could occur. Second, due to a fixed treshold on the fitting cost, arbitrary endpoints are detected for the segments, which are unsuitable as feature points. We p...

Adaptive plasmid evolution results in host-range expansion of a broad-host-range plasmid

Hogeschool Gent

Little is known about the range of hosts in which broad-host-range (BHR) plasmids can persist in the absence of selection for plasmid-encoded traits, and whether this "long-term host range" can evolve over time. Previously, the BHR multidrug resistance plasmid pB10 was shown to be highly unstable in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia P21 and Pseudomonas putida H2. To investigate whether this plasmid can adapt to such unfavorable hosts, we performed evolution experiments wherein pB10 was maintained ...

Adding up percentiles in supply chain management

Hogeschool Gent

In statistics 1+1 is not always 2. We illustrate how rules
to add up can be (mis)used in case of supply chain management where the
policy of a distribution center is based on the theory of percentiles. A correct
application of probability is given to ful¯ll commitments where guarantees
are made with a limited certainty.

A detailed study of the catalytic performance of V, Co and Cu MOFs in the oxidation of cyclohexene

Hogeschool Gent

In this research, the catalytic performance of V-, Co- and Cu-MOFs, prepared with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic (BDC) and/or 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic (BTC) ligands, is discussed for the oxidation of cyclohexene. Several parameters have been examined, for example: solvent, temperature and oxidans. The detailed product distributions and recyclability of these materials are discussed. Surprisingly, the highest conversions and highest yields of epoxide are achieved with the coordinatively saturared V...
