2D separation and profiling of complex oligosaccharide mixtures

Hogeschool Gent

The carbohydrate component of plant cell walls is made up of intricate polymeric structures which, in turn, comprise of a large number of different charged and uncharged monosaccharides. When this natural resource is used for biofuel production, saccharification is often the first step: this is the conversion of the polymeric cell wall polysaccharides to soluble oligo-and monosaccharides which can then be used as feedstock for biofuel-producing micro-organisms. However, to achieve complete sa...

About the Hierarchical Model for the Quota Representation on Environment Pollution

Hogeschool Gent

The statement of the hierarchical problem is described. The problem of environment pollution quota is an important market tool for the ecological policy, carried out on the governmental level. The problem was officially stated in the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols. The conflict, which appears between the governmental restrictions and participating companies, can be represented as a hierarchy with one coordinator (Government) and sub-systems (companies).

Access to ethnic music: Advances and perspectives in content-based music information retrieval

Hogeschool Gent

Access to digital music collections is nowadays facilitated by content-based methods that allow the retrieval of music on the basis of intrinsic properties of audio, in addition to advanced metadata processing. However, access to ethnic music remains problematic, as this music does not always correspond to the Western concepts that underlie the currently available content-based methods. In this paper, we examine the literature on access to ethnic music, while focusing on the reasons why the e...

Adaptive constructive polynomial fitting

Hogeschool Gent

To extract geometric primitives from edges, we use an incremental linear-time fitting algorithm, which is based on constructive polynomial fitting. In this work, we propose to determine the polynomial order by observing the regularity and the increase of the fitting cost. When using a fixed polynomial order under- or even overfitting could occur. Second, due to a fixed treshold on the fitting cost, arbitrary endpoints are detected for the segments, which are unsuitable as feature points. We p...

Adaptive plasmid evolution results in host-range expansion of a broad-host-range plasmid

Hogeschool Gent

Little is known about the range of hosts in which broad-host-range (BHR) plasmids can persist in the absence of selection for plasmid-encoded traits, and whether this "long-term host range" can evolve over time. Previously, the BHR multidrug resistance plasmid pB10 was shown to be highly unstable in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia P21 and Pseudomonas putida H2. To investigate whether this plasmid can adapt to such unfavorable hosts, we performed evolution experiments wherein pB10 was maintained ...

Children’s rights have become a significant field of study during the past decades, largely due to the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989. Today scholarly work on children’s rights is almost inconceivable without considering the Convention as the bearer of the children’s rights debate. The goal of this article is to critically explore academic work on the UNCRC. By means of a discourse analysis of international literature, academic discourse o...

A right to sexuality?

In discourses on the sexuality of people with learning disabilities, there is one voice that goes unheard: that of people with learning disabilities themselves. Hence the motivation for the study described here. The author went to ask people with learning disabilities to enquire about the way they perceive their relationships and their sexuality, what they think of these topics and what is important to them in this respect. There is one major constant in all this information: that the circums...

A Sensorless Drive by Applying Test Pulses Without Affecting the Average-Current Samples

Hogeschool Gent

The rotor position of a salient-pole permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) at standstill or rotating at low speed is often estimated by measuring the responses on high-frequency test signals. In some drives, the rotor position is computed by measuring important current ripples that are generated by supplying the PMSM periodically with high-frequency voltage test pulses. Besides these ripples, undesired distortions in the average-current samples have been measured. Simulation results ha...

In France, contemporary literature has taken an ‘historical’ turn, focussing again on the important events that have shaped the way we think about the world today, and on the personal experience of people who witnessed them. I want to argue that issues of biography and history are not simply ‘represented’ but are reinscribed and translated by the text. I propose to investigate this re...

Attribute Selection with Fuzzy Decision Reducts

Hogeschool Gent

Rough set theory provides a methodology for data analysis based on the approximation of concepts in information systems. It revolves around the notion of discernibility: the ability to distinguish between objects, based on their attribute values. It allows to infer data dependencies that are useful in the fields of feature selection and decision model construction. In many cases, however, it is more natural, and more effective, to consider a gradual notion of discernibility. Therefore, within...

This paper investigates the role of a pre-existing body-model that is an enabling constraint for the incorporation of objects into the body. This body-model is also a basis for the distinction between body extensions (e.g., in the case of tool-use) and incorporation (e.g., in the case of successful prosthesis use). It is argued that, in the case of incorporation, changes in the sense of body-ownership involve a reorganization of the body-model, whereas extension of the body with tools does no...

In the 2.45 GHz band, indoor wireless off-body data communication by a moving person can be problematic due to time-variant signal fading and the consequent variation in channel parameters. Off-body communication specifically suffers from the combined effects of fading, shadowing and path loss due to time-variant multipath propagation in combination with shadowing by the human body. Measurements are performed to analyze the autocorrelation, coherence time, and power spectral density for a per...

Characterization and optimization of a permanent magnet synchronous machine

Hogeschool Gent

Purpose - The first purpose of this paper is to identify by an inverse problem the unknown material characteristics in a permanent magnet synchronous machine in order to obtain a numerical model that is a realistic representation of the machine. The second purpose is to optimize the machine geometrically using the accurate numerical model for a maximal torque to losses ratio. Using the optimized geometry, a new machine can be manufactured that is more efficient than the original. Design/metho...

Chemically induced polyploidization in Spathiphyllum wallisii Regel through somatic embryogenesis

Hogeschool Gent

Polyploid Spathiphyllum wallisii Regel 'Speedy' plants were obtained from somatic embryos induced on anther filaments exposed to mitosis inhibitors. Primary embryos yielded less polyploid plantlets than secondary embryos. Colchicine could be efficiently replaced by oryzalin or trifluralin (10 muM), resulting in an average yield of 5% polyploids. The mitosis inhibitors were directly added to the induction medium. Morphological differences between diploid and tetraploid S. wallisii hybrids were...

Childcare: what do/can we expect?

Hogeschool Gent

What do parents and caregivers think about the tasks of care centres? How can we stimulatie the communication between parents and caregivers about expectations? Currently in Flanders (in Belgium), there is a lot of debate about the professionalism in childcare centres. This discussion is part of the "trend" of growing interest in the pedagogical and other functions of daycare for young children under the age of 3. Daycarecenters for young cildren has social, economic and pedagogical tasks. Th...

Childhood obesity prevention : in need of urban governance?

Hogeschool Gent

Introduction: Screening of policy documents leads us to suppose that local governments constitute the tailpiece of any public intervention in the field of childhood obesity prevention. Up till now, little research has been undertaken to identify the leadership of local politicians in childhood obesity prevention. Objective: To test the leadership of local politicians in the implementation of community based interventions on childhood obesity prevention. Within the framework of the Epode Europ...

Children’s Rights Education and Social Work: Contrasting Models and Understandings

Hogeschool Gent

Despite the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child the interest in developing a theoretical grounding for children’s rights education seems to be rather limited. This paper argues for a better understanding of children’s rights education as a distinctive field in social work. Two different conceptions of children’s rights education are identified: children’s rights education as an implementation strategy and children’s rights education as social action. Their rel...

Children’s Rights Education and Social Work: Contrasting Models and Understandings.

Hogeschool Gent

In contemporary discussions on children’s rights, the social practice of children’s rights education is predominately set forward as an implementation strategy to realize the principles of the UNCRC. From this point of view, children’s rights education is considered as an instrumental practice consisting of different techniques to achieve an extrinsic goal, characterized by teaching the content of the UNCRC. This prevailing conception of children’s rights education highlights the individual a...
